Bringing industrial chic to a piece of history

This project showcases an interior alteration of an existing loft-style apartment in the historically significant Foy & Gibson complex of warehouses, factories and showrooms – artfully executed by Bay Builders, along with Karavasil Architects. The pre-existing architectural essence of the building has been well and truly maintained during the renovation, paying homage to the old factories with an industrial approach.

Within the conventional parameters of this type of project, the exploration of manufacturing and craft allowed Bay Builders to draw upon elements of form making and material expression. The most fundamental element of the apartment would be the kitchen, with its curved joinery paired with the contrasting metallic overheads and expressive rounded stone island bench, creating a layered and refined interior.

The bathrooms are rich, textured spaces comprising of terrazzo tile, glazed blue kit-kat tiles and elegant grey stone walls. A cohesive joinery language makes its way into the wet areas, study space and bedrooms through the use of the familiar warm laminate finish and curved geometry. All elements have been custom-designed and -built, including the mirrors, which incorporate the use of functional lighting for makeup application.

The industrial nature of the factory is expressed through painted brick surfaces and black steelwork, which forms the staircase and bridge connecting two sleeping wings on the upper level. This noir theme intentionally highlights remnants of bold-red fire pipes, accentuating their existence and hinting at the original use of these factory spaces.
